All-Terrain Vehicles — Your Ticket to Off-Road Adventures

September 12th, 2007

ATV, which is short for ?all-terrain vehicles?, are any kinds of small and open, motorized tricycles and buggies that are designed generally for off-road riding. An all-terrain vehicle is designed for only one operator. Riding an ATV is just like an ordinary motorcycle. However, ATVs have a extra wheels that supply better stability at slower speeds.

Back in the 1950s the first ever ATV that was introduced was designed with six wheels. However, the first three wheeled all-terrain vehicles were introduced to improve upon the earlier models. Fame and notoriety were instantly bestowed upon this ingenious three wheeled vehicle when it was displayed in the 1971 James Bond movie — Diamonds Are Forever.

ATVs Extensive History

Various models were introduced for recreational use, after the release of the three wheeled ATVs. The newer models offered improvements such as big balloon tires without the use of mechanical suspension. It was only in the early 1980s that lower tires with suspension were introduced.

Because the majority of other vehicles cannot cross the type of terrain that an ATV can cross, its popularity when it was first introduced soared. All-Terrain Vehicles such as these became an instant hit with both the Canadian and US hunters on both sides of the border.

Aside from recreational use, sport models of ATV became popular when Honda released the 1981 Honda ATC250R with an impressive engine placement, full suspension, 5-speed transmission and stunning design.

When taking all manufacturers into account, the name Suzuki comes to mind in designing and developing very high-performance all-terrain vehicles. Ever since the beginning when the company first brought to market the very first ATV for beginning riders in 1983, it has steadfastly manufactured numerous different kinds of four-wheel ATVs for both professional and beginning riders. Various other leaders in the ATV industry include Kawasaki and Yamaha.
